5 JEWELRY TRENDS TO WATCH FOR IN 2016

2016 has begun, and like every new year, it too will try to bring fresh, exciting trends in fashion and accessories. Since not every year can witness the re-invention of the wheel, some of these trends are naturally bound to be cyclical, or carried over from previous years. JCK Magazine, which covers industry issues and style trends, has recently issued its 5th annual list of jewelry trends predictions for 2016, based on Red Carpet jewelry trends, runway fashions, and industry-specific jewelry and gemstone offerings. Here are some of their more exciting predictions for this year:

Chokers and other statement necklaces: nothing new here, since chunky necklaces have been spotted in abundance in 2015. They are well-liked by celebrities and at the last Oscars, for example, there were far more frequent than good speeches, or even good movies, for that matter. Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie, for instance, wore a $1.5 million replica of the original Duchess of Windsor’s Van Cleef & Arpels Zipper necklace in diamonds, sapphires, and platinum. Laura Dern showed off an over-sized Bulgari pendant necklace, while Cate Blanchett wore a massive turquoise bib from Tiffany & Co.. Viola Davis carried her impeccable style from How to Get Away with Murder to the red carpet, wearing a chunky Van Cleef & Arpels pearl and diamond piece.

Over-sized earrings: another trend carried over from 2015 is huge earrings. Meryl Streep, for example, wore blackened Art Deco earrings with diamonds by Fred Leighton at the Oscars. Not to be outdone, Gwyneth Paltrow opted for Anna massive Hu earrings. Rita Ora and Jennifer Hudson both sported Lorraine Schwartz pieces: Ora wore big diamond drops, while Hudson went for huge emerald earrings with diamonds.

Asymmetrical looks: mismatched earrings were big this year, whether it was a single-earring look, an imbalanced look (two earrings, each with its own size or shape) or modern double-finger cluster rings. This trend, say the folks at JCK, will no doubt be carried over to 2016.

Stacked rings: JCK calls this ongoing trend “easy and cost-effective”, and it also has the added value of being beloved by some A-listers: J Lo is crazy about stacked rings, as well as Rihanna and E!’s most famous presenter Giuliana Rancic. The lovely Rachel McAdams is also a fan, as well as mega-rich Nicole Richie, Beyonce’s sister Solange Knowles, Kristen Stewart, Eva Mendes and Kate Hudson.

Complementing the color gray: JCK is predicting that grey will be a popular color in fashion shows and Red Carpets everywhere in 2016. This is a good enough reason, say the experts, for jewelers to design pieces of complementary shades using silver, platinum, white gold, and palladium with gray diamonds and milky stones such as moonstone and labradorite.
