WITH THE UNITED KINGDOM IN THE WORLD’S SPOTLIGHT, THE JEWELRY TRADE TO GATHER AT IJL 2019 IN LONDON

One of the key jewelry markets to watch over the coming months is that of the United Kingdom. With an estimated annual value of £3.3bn at the end of 2018, it nonetheless is being rocked by incidents not of its making, with the most prominent being Brexit. The country’s new prime minister, Boris Johnson, is insisting that the UK will leave the European Union with or without a deal on the scheduled departure date of October 31.

For British jewelers, most probably the most unsettling aspect of the ongoing Brexit uncertainty is the value of the pound, which had initially fallen in value by about 10 percent against most other major currencies following the 2016 Brexit referendum, BUT then stabilized. However, since May 2019, after then-prime minister Theresa May announced plans to quit, and Johnson, her most likely successor, raised the prospect of the UK leaving the EU without an agreement, the pound slipped in value by a further 7 percent. This raised the cost of its basic components for British jewelry manufacturers, but at the same time made their finished products considerably more competitive to foreign buyers.

As a diamond center, the United Kingdom, and london in particular, does not play the primary role that once did, ever November 2013, when De Beers moves its rough sales operation out of the city to the southern African state of Botswana.

But london, as the world’s financial capital and a trend setter, which gathers in its midst not only an unusually large number of the most important fashion influencers, but also attracts more than 30 million visitors per year, the majority intent on spending, remains a critically important diamond and jewelry market, not only in terms of sales, but also in terms of its effect on what people will be buying the following year.

No wonder then that the country’s most important jewelry show, International Jewellery london (IJL), is one of the industry’s most keenly anticipated events. This year, it will be held September 1 to 3.

Located at Stand C90, MID House of Diamond will be exhibiting one of IJL’s largest collections of loose diamonds and diamond jewelry.

THE UK’S PREMIER JEWELRY TRADE FAIR

Taking place at the Olympia, a 130-year old exhibition center in London’s West Kensington, neighborhood, IJL will be taking place for the 64th time. It premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in 1955.

IJL enjoys a heritage of showcasing the best of luxury materials, design and craftsmanship, and is the pre-eminent annual destination for the best of British fine jewelry, as well as leading brands from around the globe. Entry to the show is restricted to industry professionals.

In particular, IJL takes pride in its emerging talent program, working with strategic partners to ensure that both new and established designers’ work is exhibited at Olympia in September each year, where trends are unveiled, and the jewelry industry meets in one of the creative capitals of the world.

The show features more than 500 finished jewelry manufacturers and designers, loose diamonds and colored gemstone traders, and technology and service providers exhibiting. More than 8,000 professional buyers are expected to attend, from more than 70 countries, and some 150 media representatives.

The show is owned Reed Exhibitions, the world’s leading event organizer, which also the owner of JCK Las Vegas, the United States’ premier jewelry fair.
